PHOTOS | City of Gold is now city of filth
Johannesburg, known as Egoli – the City of Gold in isiZulu – was once synonymous with comfort, hope and opportunities for the millions who flocked to the city. But, today, that glitter is gone, replaced by filth, garbage and dilapidated buildings. The stench of urine, raw sewage and rotting garbage fills the air as you enter the inner city. Those venturing into the CBD are greeted by piles of uncollected bags of trash on street corners.
The New Library Hotel, once a popular club on the corner of Commissioner and Fraser streets, is a derelict shell Often, these are waste pickers’ last hope, as they dig through the rubbish, hoping to find food or recycling materials to sell. Not only is walking in the city centre dangerous because of crime, it is also difficult to navigate around huge potholes.
Raw sewage runs down the streets, something that has become a normal sight among those living and working in the inner city. One wonders what went wrong with this once shiny city.
