Police say they received information about the abduction in Phoenix on Monday.

It's alleged that the woman called her husband, claiming that she was forcibly taken and pleaded for him to pay a ransom as there was a threat on her life.Investigations into the matter revealed that it was not the case and she was charged with perjury. Mike Venter, who works with police on missing person cases, says this has a massive impact on already strained resources.

"The non-profit organisations that assist in missing persons, I would say the majority of the time receive no funding at all. So when you are concentrating on a case which is ideally a hoax, those spare resources can be speared to actual cases where there is a matter of life and death."
