Opinion: Last week’s discovery of another possible grave site at a residential school has reignited controversy about Macdonald memorials.
? Why it’s the ancient Greeks, of course. : “When the school is on the reserve the child lives with its parents, who are savages; he is surrounded by savages, and though he may learn to read and write his habits, and training and mode of thought are Indian.”has reignited the controversy about Macdonald memorials, and will likely lead to further calls for statue removal — and further pushback from those who insist this amounts to erasing history.
The structure of statues bears this out: Many are literally placed on a pedestal, and metaphorically situate their subjects similarly. And when not on a pedestal, we still often have to look up, as they’re frequently larger than life — a not-so-subtle message about the character of their subjects. This reveals that the removal or destruction of a statue is an act of historical significance, one that highlights, rather than eliminates, history — and in so doing, the act itself makes history. History is not communicated merely through the statues we erect; it’s also conveyed by the ones we decline to erect and, critically, by those we choose to destroy.
