Jason Logan: Pete Dye proved there’s more than one way to build a golf course
, Toronto-based course architect Jeff Mingay applauds the fact that we are no longer in an era where the greatness of a golf course is measured by its difficulty.
This philosophy is on full display at many of the remote golf resorts that have cropped up over the last decade-plus. It is also apparent in the many private club restorations that have taken place over the years. Narrow and tree-lined is out. Expansiveness with angles is in. Canadian golf fans will see that at next year’s RBC Canadian Open, with Martin Ebert having brought past host Hamilton Golf and Country Club nearer to Harry Colt’s original layout of more than a century ago.
“Pete Dye gets a lot of grief for building difficult golf courses. Many of them are, but usually not in a simplistic sense,” Mingay says. “He never bunkered narrow fairways left and right, for example. Instead, he created interesting angles that present bite-off-as-much-as-you-can-chew scenarios and scary looks from the tees and into the greens. Among other things, he was a master of deception.
