A necropsy was completed on the dog on April 3 and “showed respiratory system involvementm" according to Public Health. Further testing is currently underway, it said. “Based on the current evidence in Canada, the risk to the general public remains low and current scientific evidence suggests that the risk of a human contracting avian influenza from a domestic pet is minor.”
“Nonetheless, owners are encouraged to take appropriate precautions to protect their pets and themselves,” they said, advising pet owners to avoid feeding pets raw meat from game birds or poultry and to stop pets from playing with or consuming dead birds.
