'(I)f anybody gets close to the pylons it’s no trouble for the pavement to break off and go over.'
This image of a section of the road through Fox Island River-Point au Mal shows just how much damage has been done to the road. - ContributedTwenty-six years ago, Jeff LeRoy documented the damage the sea can do to the road through Fox Island River-Point au Mal and on Wednesday, Aug. 3, he did it again. In 1996 LeRoy and another man filmed a video as they drove over the road. The wind was blowing, and water was washing all over the road.
LeRoy said there are no warning signs there and he’s concerned about vehicles, including school buses, having to travel over the road.“That’s when we’ll get the winds that’s going to attack it again.” He’s been in contact with Long Range Mountains Liberal MP Gudie Hutchings, the federal minister of Rural Economic Development, and with provincial Transportation and Infrastructure Minister Elvis Loveless on the matter and took part in a Zoom meeting with them a few months ago.Wakeham said there was talk then about a long-term solution and an expectation that things would get done. He and LeRoy are both still waiting for that solution.
Like LeRoy, Wakeham said it’s not good enough to go and dump a few loads over the side of the road and expect it to last.
