Patrick Stewart talks about Star Trek: Picard season 2 and its big reveal about Jean-Luc's mother. 'That was actually something that had been in my head for quite a long time. I knew that there had been some kind of trauma.'

Patrick Stewart discusses Jean-Luc’s emotional mother reveal in Star Trek: Picard season 2. Season 1 of Paramount+’s Picard saw the long-awaited return of Stewart as the famed Enterprise captain from Star Trek: The Next Generation. In the recently-completed season 2, viewers had a chance to learn more than ever before about the childhood experiences that helped shape the reticent and guarded Jean-Luc.

Of course it’s an open question whether viewers wanted or needed to know more about Picard’s childhood and the reasons behind his closed-off nature. Nevertheless, Picard season 2 focused heavily on a formative childhood experience for the one-time captain, namely the mysterious disappearance of his mother Yvette.

That was actually something that had been in my head for quite a long time. I knew that there had been some kind of trauma. There had been hints and suggestions. So these might have only been in the writers’ room, you know, where people would talk about this kind of thing then.

Jean-Luc Picard of course experienced plenty of trauma in his original run as Enterprise captain on Star Trek: The Next Generation. He most famously at one point was assimilated into the Borg, becoming the sinister Locutus, before being rescued. Later Picard had another life-altering adventure when his mind merged with an alien archive that downloaded the experiences of a long-dead individual into his brain, causing him to live out an entire lifetime in the blink of an eye.

Indeed if TNG taught us anything about Jean-Luc Picard it’s that he possesses an almost super-human sense of his own identity, making him almost impossible to break. And it seems now that Star Trek: Picard season 2 has revealed the secret behind Picard’s strength: his ability to lock away bad memories like his mother's suicide and never deal with them on a conscious level.
