Prospects Luis Campusano and CJ Abrams homer in Padres' loss to the Cubs; Reiss Knehr hoping a developing curve pushes him to new heights

By virtue of promotions and President of Baseball Operations A.J. Preller’s willingness to trade prospects to supplement the big-league team, the depth of the Padres’ system isn’t what it was just two years ago.A day after their top pitching prospect wowed in the Cactus League opener, two young bats — Luis Campusano and CJ Abrams — collected their first homers of the spring in a 5-4 loss to the Cubs at Sloan Park.

The right-handed-hitting Campusano lined a ball over the left-field wall in the fourth inning and the left-handed-hitting Abrams hit yanked a ball high over the wall in right in the fifth, boosting early bids to force their way onto the opening-day roster. As for the 23-year-old Campusano, ranked No. 37 in MLB.com’s top-100, he’s one of four catchers on the 40-man roster and knocking on the door, too, after hitting .295/.365/.541 with 15 homers in 81 games last year at Triple-A El Paso.

“I definitely think I’ve figured out the movement on it and the timely use of ,” Knehr said after allowing a homer, striking out three and walking one over two innings. “I get enough movement on it that the velo really doesn’t affect me that much.”
