Late homers from Jorge Alfaro and Nomar Mazara, both in roster battles, carry Padres over Mariners
Two home runs off the bench helped the Padres beat the Mariners, 6-4, to open Cactus League play on Friday at the Peoria Sports Complex.Jorge Alfaro, in competition for a spot on the roster as a catcher, came off the bench to supply the Padres’ first homer of the spring, a three-run shot to right that gave the Padres’ a 4-3 lead in the sixth inning. He also threw out top Mariners prospect Julio Rodriguez as he attempted to steal second base in the eighth.
LHP Mackenzie Gore opened the game with two strikeouts over two scoreless, hitless innings and RHPs Kevin Kopps, Carlos Belen, Brink, Steven Wilson and James Norwood each fired a scoreless inning. Norwood struck out two in the ninth after former Padres C Luis Torrens’ double put runners on second and third with no outs. … RHP Angel Felipe served up Rodriguez’s three-run, 117-mph homer in the sixth inning. RHP Tayler Scott struck out three while allowing a run in the seventh.
