The UPEI Panthers’ Alexis Wood controls the ball in an Atlantic University Field Hockey League game against the Saint Mary’s Huskies. Wood has been selected for the final selection process of a Field Hockey Canada camp in Vancouver this week. Players selected will have an opportunity to move forward to international tournaments with the national under-21 and under-23 teams. “I’m so fortunate for this opportunity,” said the 20-year-old Wood, named the Panthers’ most valuable player for the 2021 season. “This is the highest performance level environment I ever played in alongside some of the best athletes in Canada. Nothing can top this.” “I was even more surprised when I got invited back,” said Smith, who shared UPEI rookie-of-the-year honours with Doiron last season. “I was super happy. It will be a great experience overall.”
The biggest difference for Smith and Wood in Toronto was the playing surface. On P.E.I., the players play on what is referred to as tire turf, but the fields are water turf in Toronto and Vancouver. Wood, who is giving back to the sport on P.E.I. by coaching at Queen Charlotte, was more familiar with the playing conditions as she is living in Toronto this summer for a research project and has been able to train on the water turf at the University of Toronto.“The intensity has never been less than maximum,” said Wood, who is from Cherry Valley and a graduate of Charlottetown Rural High School.
