The environment minister promised a moratorium on developments in buffer zones following a controversy around a housing construction project near Point DeRoche.

Other exemptions apply to landowners protecting existing homes or infrastructure from erosion or to repairs to existing erosion control structures. Federal or provincial governments are also exempt from the moratorium, as are projects that have received an environmental impact assessment approval.In an interview with SaltWire Network on Feb. 1, Myers said his department is funding two separate studies from the UPEI Climate Lab.
Green Opposition Leader Peter Bevan-Baker said he believes existing shoreline protection policies have been ignored. It had already been within the buffer zone, defined as 15 metres from the high tide mark.
Guptill said the moratorium is a response to what he believes was a “huge mistake” in allowing the Point DeRoche development to proceed. “The department did not feel that there was a buffer zone violation, that they were inside the buffer zone," Myers said on Feb. 1.
