Owners of 'dangerous' dogs in Lancashire prosecuted for failing to control their pet
Scores of dog owners have been prosecuted in Lancashire over the last five years after their out-of-control pets attacked and injured people.
The previous year, court proceedings were launched in 10 cases against dog owners, with 13 convictions. In 2019 there were 14 prosecutions and six convictions. In total over the last five years, there have been 85 prosecutions, 73 convictions, and 70 sentences handed out. The courts also slapped offenders with average fines of £340 in 2021, a 42% rise on the average fine of £239 in 2020 and the highest average in the last five years. Average compensation paid out to victims, however, fell by 35% from £333 in 2020 to £217 last year.
Of cases last year, there were 549 convictions , and 558 sentences were handed out . The fluctuating figures may be explained by court delays caused by the pandemic. Malcolm Morley, junior vice president for the British Veterinary Association, said: “Any dog of any size or breed has the capacity to react or behave in an aggressive way, particularly if they haven’t been properly socialised and trained.
“Our advice to anyone looking to get a puppy is to carefully consider if they can meet a new pet’s welfare needs in the longer term. Use the free Puppy Contract to make sure you are getting a happy, healthy puppy from a responsible breeder. Learn about how dogs communicate, ensure children know how to behave around dogs and never leave them unsupervised together.
