Doreen Nelson was selected as one of 51 students chosen from across the United States, Canada, and Puerto Rico among 1,200 applicants to shadow physicians through a program at Northwestern University.
Nelson, who is currently a University of Ottawa student, will be working in the anesthesiology department at Northwestern Medicine as part of the eight-week Northwestern Medicine Pre-Med Internship Program in Chicago. Northwestern University, which oversees the internship, is a private research university in Evanston, Ill. It is among the most selective universities in the United States with an acceptance rate frequently well below 10 per cent.
As part of the internship, Nelson will be given the opportunity to observe the internal workings of a clinical department, the Northwestern Medicine website says. “In addition to project work, our weekly rotating observations expose interns to a variety of clinical environments, broaden their scopes of interest and allow them to gain an understanding of new and different areas of medicine,” a post on the website says. “Step into the operating room, shadow physicians while they perform a procedure or test, or observe face-to-face daily interaction between a trusted care provider and a patient.
