This morning's OscarNoms could have some surprises—what will they be?
On Monday the Academy Award nominations will be revealed, and the question I hope I’m asking is, “How didhappen?” Surprises, in the Oscar race, are good. They tell us that the months of cumulative orthodoxy that seem to make everything a foregone conclusion are no match for the collective will and idiosyncrasy of a voting body that is changing dramatically.
Most nominations will not be surprises, but some will be, at the edges, and a lot of questions that remain mysteries today will be answered on Monday morning. Here are a few of mine.I do my Academy Award punditry from New York City, where thou shalt worship no other gods before. I have always felt that L.A. predictors tend to overvalue what they hear on the circuit—at the official Academy screenings, the fake film festivals that dole out carefully engineered career-achievement prizes, and so on.
