Several new studies reveal that women in Hollywood are breaking new ground, both in front of and behind the camera. But it’s not all good news, as the research reveals that the highest grossing films were still dominated by men.

Box office hits includingcontributed to these gains in the number of sole female protagonists in studio features. Male protagonists were featured in 43% of the films, and the remaining 17% had a combination of male and female protagonists.
