As the world’s HIV leaders gather in Montreal this week for the 24th International AIDS Conference, Canada must recommit to ending AIDS as a public health threat by 2030. Opinion by Meg French

, Canada must recommit to ending AIDS as a public health threat by 2030. As a start, Canada should invest $1.2 billion over three years — its fair share — in the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria, and remove barriers to funding community-based organizations that are critical actors in the fight against HIV.

In Ethiopia, being a transgender woman is a crime, and in other eastern and southern African countries an average one-third of transgender people are living with HIV. There, community-led HIV programming is tied to a host of human rights protections for LBGTQ+ women, including security, freedom and justice.
