Graham Thomson: Anti-vax, anti-science and anti-reality: Meet Danielle Smith, the favourite to be Alberta’s next premier via torontostar
Call it a hijacking, a reverse takeover or even outright theft. But right-wing demagogue Danielle Smith appears to be on an early trajectory to win the United Conservative Party’s leadership race and replace Jason Kenney as Alberta premier.
“We have had enough of Eastern Canada robbing us blind,” she told an enthusiastic audience of 270 in Edmonton two weeks ago. But Toews has struggled to define himself as something other than Kenney 2.0. Or to simply spark some excitement. Mind you, that’s been a challenge for every candidate but Smith.They’re trying to appear reasonable to appeal to a wide audience of average Albertans. Smith is laser-focused on a subset of angry conservatives.
How, they wonder, can a party under a leader promoting conspiracy theories and a “sideshow scam” in 2022 pivot to win a general election against the well-prepared NDP in 2023?
