Floyd Shivambu is too policy-oriented to appeal to an average person, writes Lehumo Sejaphala.
Politics is indeed not religion. Loyalties shift and “strategies and tactics” change within a short space of time. Nothing demonstrates this better than Floyd Shivambu ’s resignation or non-renewal of membership from the Economic Freedom Fighters – an erratic development which has sent shockwaves across the country’s political landscape.
This would make sense especially since Floyd was part of a cohort of EFF founding members who drafted the party’s founding document, manifesto and the Constitution. He is also credited by some as being the brain behind most of the EFF’s ideas and policies. Even if all of this turns out to be just speculation, Floyd’s haphazard exit from the EFF seems to have been single-handedly orchestrated by Julius himself to ensure that he has no serious competitor at the party upcoming elective congress.
What has happened to him is akin to what is called constructive dismissal in employment relations — i.e., a situation wherein an employee terminates his/her contract of employment with or without notice because the employer made continued employment intolerable for the employee. The above notwithstanding, Floyd’s role in the EFF and his political capital must equally not be over-exaggerated. It is true that the man is a thinker, but without the charisma, charm and personal magnetism of political characters like Julius Malema and Jacob Zuma who can readily woo the masses, the man would not go far politically.
These techniques are as follows: performing authenticity — when politicians adjust their performances to appear “real” and relatable to audiences; demasking — when politicians attempt to remove their official “masks” displaying either vulnerability or strength; breaking from routine — which involves interrupting or deviating from the expected patterns and routines in ways that are surprising, delightful, or thought-provoking to create a sense of novelty, and leave a lasting impression on...
