Gauteng police are currently investigating the circumstance that led to the death of EFF Johannesburg regional leader and councillor, Moshe Mphahlele.

It is believed Mphahlele was caught in a crossfire when Joburg Metro Police and private security officers tried to disperse a crowd of people who were trying to forcefully occupy containers erected to provide shelter at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic in Bramley near Alexandra. Gauteng police spokesperson, Lieutenant Colonel Mavela Masondo, “Police received information about a man who was shot and taken to the local clinic. Upon arrival at the clinic, police were shown the body of a man with had a gunshot wound. Preliminary investigations suggest that the victim was shot when the members of Johannesburg Metro Police Department and private security officers were removing people who allegedly occupied the private containers in Bramley.
