Opinion: Cancer care in B.C., once considered a model system, now has lengthening wait times among the worst in Canada.
How are we to evaluate the government’s “10-year cancer plan,” entitled “cancer care you can count on?”
Given the failure to invest in critical infrastructure over the past decade, the three-year funding commitment of $90 million per year is inadequate. It is a very limited, short-term response to a crisis years in the making and, as written, it will do little to achieve needed improvements unless additional elements are addressed.Article content
Third, comprehensive and transparent reporting on the performance of cancer treatment services is essential. This information should not derive from personal experience, devastating patient accounts and news reports. A comprehensive cancer reporting and quality oversight system must be implemented in B.C. Without it, there is no accountability, no informed oversight, ineffective governance, and no effective planning for cancer control.
We wish the government well. It is indeed encouraging that the premier said “this is just the beginning.”
