Opinion: It is 2023 and Ontario’s Black community is still working feverishly to achieve representation in community, business, and government.

When we talk about the many challenges and barriers the Black community faces, we also need to think about who is going to help tackle them. Hence, why representation in government matters so much. Black politicians who have lived experience are in the best position to understand and tackle the issues our community faces.

For the Progressive Conservative party in Ontario, Charmaine Williams is a god send. It’s almost bizarre that only now in 2023, they finally have a Black representative in their cabinet. One can assume it is a sign that the party is changing, becoming more diverse, and becoming more sensitive to BIPOC issues.

The Black community has a long way to go, but one thing is for sure, representation not only matters, but is the only way we will truly achieve change.
