On Twitter, links to a small social networking site for academics are blocked but links to the far-right site Gab are not. So what’s really behind this? Opinion by Robert W. Gehl

So what’s really behind these blocks? The common thread is not that Scholar.social, Pixelfed.social, and @JoinMastodon are harmful — it’s that these are links and accounts associated with the “fediverse.”is an alternative system where small communities can control their own social media. It’s meant to be a guard against centralized control — the sort of control Musk enjoys with Twitter.

In blocking links to the fediverse, perhaps Musk is operating with the good old-fashioned capitalist spirit of crushing your competition. But it may not be so simple. As a test, I also posted a link tothat harbours self-identified Nazis and anti-trans activists, and has been linked to mass shootings in the United States.

Gab openly touts itself as an alternative to Twitter. I wondered if Twitter would block this competition, too.So: Twitter blocks academics talking about teaching college students, but allows links to bona fide Nazis?
