And now, in a prominent case, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has booted out former star cabinet ministers Jody Wilson-Raybould and Jane Philpott from the Liberal caucus and prevented them from running under the party banner in the upcoming federal election.
It is telling, after all, that these politicians choose to sit as independents rather than cross the floor, despite the significant disadvantages, like a lack of resources that make conducting parliamentary business more difficult and a diminished likelihood of being re-elected. These are not simple disavowals of parties on the part of dissenting politicians, but rather of the Canadian model of centralized leadership.
In a way, this can be seen as an expression of how populism has risen in our unique political system that limits political revolutions and political extremism; one where it’s harder for leadership spills to occur than in places like Australia or Britain.though by and large, that power has been neutralized by leaders.
