ICYMI - 'I’m angry': Wilson-Raybould and Philpott don't belong in caucus, Liberal MPs say
OTTAWA — Liberal backbenchers and cabinet ministers alike condemned former attorney general Jody Wilson-Raybould on Monday for surreptitiously recording a phone conversation with the country’s top public servant, Michael Wernick.
On his way into the weekly cabinet meeting Tuesday, Infrastructure Minister Francois-Philippe Champagne criticized Wilson-Raybould’s ethics, saying he had never recorded any conversations he had while working as a lawyer. Ontario’s Liberal MPs are due to have a mid-day meeting to discuss the issue, before Wednesday’s meeting of the full group.
Montreal MP Marc Miller called the secret recording “distressing” and “somewhat repugnant.” He noted that courts are typically skeptical about such “one-sided” recordings because “there’s an ability of the person recording to prime the evidence, consciously or unconsciously.” Both Wilson-Raybould and Philpott have said they intend to remain in the Liberal caucus and run as Liberal candidates in this fall’s election.
