Dave Feschuk: Auston Matthews eases some concerns in Leafs’ loss to Bruins. It’s all about the playoffs, anyway
The season before that, in the 56-game COVID-shortened campaign, he topped the NHL while scoring at a rate that translated to 64 goals in an 82-game run.on pace for 39 goals, in the midst of his prime at age 25, told you something hasn’t been quite right. And Matthews confirmed as much.
Scoring goals in the regular season doesn’t necessarily further that goal. Although Matthews did roof a beauty that made it 3-3 early in the third period, which reminded everyone of a salient point. Even nursing an injury, the guy who spent the previous couple of seasons establishing himself as the world’s best goal scorer is still a pretty damn fine goal scorer.
But as Toronto coach Sheldon Keefe was saying recently, sometimes even when the bulk of the details are dialed in, it’s the big mistakes that hurt his team. And certainly Toronto was guilty of a few doozies.
