Dave Feschuk: As one streak ends for the Leafs’ Mitch Marner, maybe another will begin
captain Darryl Sittler reeled off what was, in 1978, the longest consecutive-games point streak in franchise history, he doesn’t remember being aware of the milestone.
“They started talking about it when Eddie tied my streak. That’s when I became aware of it,” Sittler said. “But if you asked to me today, ‘OK, Darryl, there’s another streak that you had, what is it?’ I don’t know what that is. I don’t look at that stuff.” The only active players on the list are Kane and Crosby, both surefire Hockey Hall of Famers. Among the retired players, only Nicholls has yet to be inducted into the Yonge Street shrine. And Nicholls, who averaged more than a point a game over a career that spanned more than 1,100 games, once authored a 70-goal, 150-point season for the L.A. Kings in the late 1980s.
Heading into Saturday’s game in Washington, Marner was on pace for what would be a career-high 98-point season. Sittler, mind you, said he’s been most impressed by Marner’s rare ability to play in all situations while being effective on both sides of the puck. Heading into Saturday, Marner ranked 22nd among NHL forwards in power-play time and 14th among forwards in short-handed minutes. Nobody who has played as much on the power play has put in more time on the penalty kill.
