NEW YORKFor many, New York is the city that never sleeps. For Mitch Marner and theMarner failed to get a point for the first time since Oct. 24 and the Maple Leafs lost in regulation for the first time since Nov. 11 as the pair of much-talked about streaks came to a close on Broadway.
“We all would have loved for it to continue,” captain John Tavares said of Marner’s streak. “It was a hell of a run. Obviously I didn’t want to see it end, but at the same time, even though it has, it’s still extremely impressive.” “I thought we played a fine hockey game,” said coach Sheldon Keefe. “We didn’t execute great on offence. Defensively, we were excellent again. They had two scoring chances really, and scored on both of them.Michael Bunting got the lone Maple Leafs goal, his 10th game in a row with at least a point. It was assisted by Conor Timmins, his fifth assist in his sixth game with the Maple Leafs.
Pat Quinn was the coach, Mats Sundin the captain and — stop us if you heard this before — the team bowed out in the first round of the playoffs, losing in seven games to the Philadelphia Flyers.
