One political scientist who studies provincial politics said he’s unaware of any sitting member who has publicly raised money for such a legal fight, though noted that former U.S. President Donald TrumpGiven the limited expense of merely launching a civil lawsuit, it seems to indicate a “real weakness” on Ke’s part, says Nelson Wiseman, a University of Toronto professor emeritus.But it appears there’s nothing about the fundraising that violates election-financing or provincial ethics rules.
Citing the sources, Global said Ke received around $50,000 from the Chinese Consulate in Toronto that was channelled through a series of intermediaries. The MPP stepped down from the Tory caucus after the report was published, saying he wanted to avoid being a distraction for the government of Premier Doug Ford while he tries to clear his name.
