'You will not present an undue risk to society,' the parole board tells Joey Violi, despite concerns over his and his family's mob ties
“As stated by the judge at sentencing, cocaine is a scourge, an epidemic and a cancer to society and poses serious dangers to the life of our society and in our community. Fentanyl abuse claims the lives of Canadians. Drug trafficking or importation is not a victimless crime.”
“Your upbringing was loving and happy. You obtained your high school diploma in 1989 and completed some college and university courses from the Toronto School of Business and McMaster University,” the board says. He completed several programs in prison, including in trade skills, anger management, coping, and religion.
“After a lengthy first incarceration, the ease in which you moved back with your criminal associates to again deal in seriously dangerous drugs is concerning to the Board. “The mitigating factors in your situation prevail over the aggravating factors. The next step is a period of parole that has sufficient structure to monitor your reintegration and protect the community.”
