Alberta’s police watchdog is investigating after one person was killed and another injured after Mounties opened fire during an attempted arrest on Monday.
At about 7:30 a.m., St. Paul RMCP were attempting to arrest two people who were suspects in several ongoing police investigations. They were believed to be on Saddle Lake Cree Nation.
Mounties found the suspects in the area of the nation and “an interaction occurred,” police said in a Monday news release, leading to a confrontation between police and the suspects when the officers fired their service weapons. One suspect is dead and a second suspect has been transported to hospital in critical condition, police said. No RCMP officers were injured.
The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team has been directed to investigate the circumstances of the officer shooting, while the Alberta RCMP is conducting an internal review. ASIRT’s mandate is to effectively, independently and objectively investigate incidents involving Alberta’s police that have resulted in serious injury or death to any person, as well as serious or sensitive allegations of police misconduct.
