He joins Khotso Mokoena, Ryk Neethling, Hendrik Ramaala, Roland Schoeman and Sunette Viljoen as four-time South African Olympians.Durban-born Le Clos hit the wall in a time of 1:52.96 with Phelps 5/100th of a second behind in 1:53.01.In addition to that gold medal, Le Clos also won silver in the men’s 100m butterfly in both London and Rio de Janeiro in 2016, and took the runner-up spot in the 200m freestyle in Brazil.
Meanwhile, Le Clos has qualified for the men’s 100m butterfly in Paris as part of an eight-strong Team SA aquatics squad. Le Clos is considered a rank outsider for a medal – or to even make the final – and is currently ranked outside the top 30 athletes in the world this season.As a reminder, below are the financial incentives promised by the Silver medallists R200 000 and the coach R50 000, promised that he has a ‘big surprise’ for all Team SA medal winners, suggesting there could be more prize money coming their way.
