EXCLUSIVE: Olympian Laura Kenny shares baby gender after heartbreaking losses: ‘I’ve never felt so relieved’
Cycling’s golden couple Sir Jason and Dame Laura Kenny have exclusively revealed that their new baby will be a boy. Although they have decided on a name for the new arrival, due in July, for now, they are remaining tight-lipped about it. But sharing their baby’s gender for the first time, Laura beams, “We’re having another little boy.”
She adds, “I love a name that can be shortened. “Albie is Albert Louie and there’s an abbreviation again this time. When Laura touched down in Mallorca for a bike race last October, she was hit by a wave of nausea. Scouting out an airport pharmacy, she picked up a pregnancy test and darted into a nearby toilet. Less than a year previously, the world’s most successful woman cyclist had suffered her miscarriage while commentating at a race on the island.
Now 25 weeks pregnant, the four-times Olympic champion says she has only just begun to relax. And while most women might be tempted to wish away their pregnancy symptoms, the 30-year-old has found hers a source of great comfort. “As an athlete, people think you’re so focused that you put everything else to the side,” she says. “But I have never had such an overwhelming desire to do anything like try for another baby. After the ectopic pregnancy I just felt so strongly that this can’t be the end. Bike riding and gold medals bring happiness, but it’s for such a short period of time. Children are your life and Albie is my entire world.
She wrote, “A year ago today I was sat in A&E knowing I was really poorly but not knowing what was wrong with me. When "He could quite easily have said, ‘I don’t think we need all these extra tests,’ but absolutely everything I’ve needed for reassurance he’s told me to go for it without question.
