Now, scientists have found a Roman sex toy for the first time which was buried for almost 2,000 years near Hadrian’s wall.but was initially thought to be a darning tool and never studied in detail.
“If the phallus is a sex object, then it would also be the first known sex object from the Roman Empire. Evidence found that there was smoothness at both sides of the object, and less in the middle, indicating both ends were well used.It is also possible, the experts believe, that the object’s purpose changed over time. It could have started life as a pestle before becoming a sex toy afterwards, or vice versa, for example.
“To what extent might this evidence also survive buried in the soil over 2,000 years? With the object in its present state, and recovered nearly 30 years ago, these were not aspects of research that we could pursue in this instance.”
