The Yukon Coroner’s Service has released the results of its investigation into the deaths of Valerie Theoret, who was 37, and her baby Adele Roesholt outside their cabin near Einarson Lake on Nov. …
WHITEHORSE — A coroner says there was nothing a woman could have done to prevent a predatory attack by a starving grizzly bear that killed her and her 10-month old daughter in Yukon.
The service says trapper Gjermund Roesholt had just returned to the cabin when the bear charged at him, and he shot the animal dead before he discovered the bodies of his partner and infant daughter nearby. He says the 18-year-old male grizzly that attacked the mother and daughter was too emaciated to hibernate and in pain because it had eaten a porcupine and quills were penetrating the bear’s digestive tract.
“What makes this incident especially tragic is that the family took proper precautions to prevent something like this from happening,” he says.
