Somehow, the Ottawa Redblacks need to find a way to navigate a path that gets them beyond the offensive mediocrity that happened Friday night at TD Place.
Ottawa’s football fans — and credit to them for continuing to show up through the good, the bad and the really ugly — deserve better than what they saw in a 17-3 loss to the Calgary Stampeders. Imagine paying for tickets to go see your first Redblacks game and witnessing that stinker; you’re probably not going back anytime soon. In the Redblacks’ last 19 home games, they are 1-18. Let that sink in … one win, 18 losses. Since winning the first two games of the 2019 season, they’re 5-33.
It’s only one game. The problem in selling that to Redblacks fans is it’s more than one game. It’s three years now of offensive stumbles. New coaches, new players … yes. But the stench of three years is hard to remove. During his post-game press conference Friday, LaPolice was asked if he considered yanking Evans at halftime. The coach said Evans had done a good job coming out of the half in the past couple of games so he decided to stick with him.
“This is definitely not what we wanted,” said defensive back Antoine Pruneau. “Two weeks ago – when we played against Montreal — the offence moved the ball and we didn’t perform well on defence. We’re not good enough to not play the three phases of the game. What’s happening is extremely frustrating, especially in front of our fans. This is unacceptable.
