Through nearly three quarters of bad football, Ottawa Redblacks coach Paul LaPolice was determined to stick with Caleb Evans, his starting quarterback.
There was booing from the fans as Ottawa’s offence made way too many mistakes Friday night. Bad quarterbacking, bad route running, bad everything. And while LaPolice thought about making a move to Nick Arbuckle coming out of halftime, he stuck with Evans and the young quarterback continued to struggle. So did the Redblacks offence, which was really, really bad much of the time in a 17-3 loss to the Calgary Stampeders.
In nearly three quarters, Evans completed 10-of-21 passes for 66 yards. He threw a costly interception and fumbled deep in Calgary territory. Nick Arbuckle, who completed 17-of-23 passes for 186 yards replaced Evans. Give the Redblacks credit for battling. With Arbuckle behind centre, they at least moved the ball. But, with a bit more than two minutes left, he tossed a pass that was picked off by Titus Wall, his second interception of the game. The CFL Command Centre ruled against an Ottawa coach’s challenge, looking for pass interference.
With 9.5 minutes left in the first half, Paredes’ 48-yard field goal attempt sailed wide right and Williams returned it to the Ottawa 25.Article content Ottawa got a boost when linebacker Shaheed Salmon made a really nice play to tip a Mitchell pass into the air and pull it down for an interception, taking it 30 yards to the Calgary 18. But two plays later, Evans, hit while he tried to pass, fumbled.
