Northern Lights, also known as Aurora borealis, could be seen in the UK tonight as a rare 'red alert' has been made. Skywatchers in the United Kingdom have been told to keep a close eye out for the phenomena, which has appeared a few times in recent months, as it could be back this evening, August 17. T he Northern Lights are not usually seen in the south of England, where it is generally only seen when there is a strong geomagnetic storm.

The Northern Lights were spotted in areas such as Huyton , Crosby , Belle Vale and Norris Green . Many shared their incredible photos of scenes across the region on social media.
photographer Colin Lane captured some incredible images of the Northern Lights in Crosby at the time. Upon seeing the Aurora, Colin said: 'It's mega guys, what a night...insane colours.'
