The Mikisew Cree First Nation (MCFN) is asking for mental health workers, funding for suicide prevention programs following recent suicides
“What is happening in our community cannot be turned with a blind eye anymore. We can feel the grief amongst the people, the hurt,” said Tuccaro in a video posted to MCFN’s Facebook page.
“As the chief of the Mikisew Cree First Nation, I too get these calls about our membership wanting to hurt themselves. It’s something that I take near and dear to my heart.” MCFN’s request is being co-ordinated through the Nunee Health Authority. It has been passed on to Indigenous Services Canada and Alberta Health Services.Tuccaro said MCFN’s leadership is concerned that there will be more suicides and suicide attempts in the community.
“Our nation urgently needs mental health support in our community to address the immediate and short-term crisis and sustained funding for mental health and addictions in the long term, focusing on health promotion, prevention and reclaiming cultural identity,” he said.Sign up to receive daily headline news from the Calgary SUN, a division of Postmedia Network Inc.By clicking on the sign up button you consent to receive the above newsletter from Postmedia Network Inc.
