Jeremy Hunt said the country was officially in recession last week
North Northamptonshire and West Northamptonshire Councils have revealed they have not yet decided on whether to raise Council Tax next year after the Government gave them new powers to do so.
Also included in the statement was the new authority for local councils to increase council tax by up to 4.99% from April next year. At the moment they cannot do this by more than 2.99% without a referendum. This means people in Band D homes will on average pay more than £2,000 a year for the first time as bills go up by around £100, according to the Mirror. Household disposable income will plummet 7.
Both councils are currently facing a deficit of millions of pounds on their budgets this year. WNC revealed in September it was expecting a £7.6 million shortfall for this year, whilst a report by public sector union UNISON predicted NNC facing a deficit of £25.1 million earlier this month. A spokesman from NNC said: "Like every year, a review of Council Tax levels will form part of our annual budget setting process, details of which will be announced next month."
