England’s World Cup hopes are over but there are Champions Trophy ramifications when they face the Dutch – and Bas de Leede knows it
Arsenal should stop complaining and help fix the Premier League’s referee crisis themselveswhen the teams meet in Pune on Wednesday, with Netherlands’ star all-rounder Bas de Leede admitting another prized scalp at thisJos Buttler’s men head into their penultimate match of the tournament needing a win to keep alive hopes of finishing in the top eight and qualifying for the 2025 Champions Trophy.
“It’s a little bit of a cliché but they’re a quality side who haven’t fired yet. So we’ve got to be aware of that. But we’ve also got to be aware their confidence can’t be that high so it’s a real opportunity for us to try and get a win. I’m excited for it.”The Dutch have twice shocked England at T20 World Cups, at Lord’s in 2009 and in Chittagong during the 2014 tournament in Bangladesh.
“I was at home,” he said. “My parents went to Lord’s to watch and there was a babysitter at home. She didn’t want me watching the second half of the game so after the innings break I had to go to sleep and unfortunately missed it all. I still hold her responsible for that up until this day! I have watched it back a lot of times. I’ve sort of gotten over missing it now.”
Wins so far against South Africa and Bangladesh have seen this World Cup gain traction back home in the Netherlands. “There’s a lot of newspaper articles being written about it and TV news coverage which is normally not the case,” says De Leede.
