Netflix rolls back some of its rules on password sharing amid confusion, with an update clarifying that an account can be used when going on vacation and plans for users outside a household.
After a mistake announcement and massive subscriber backlash, Netflix amends its rules on password sharing once again. Netflix has over 225 million subscribers worldwide, with many users benefiting from sharing accounts with others not in their household. In December 2022, Netflix announced that it planned to crack down on password sharing and would charge subscribers extra for sharing their logins.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY In a new update from Netflix, the streaming service is clarifying its password-sharing measures amid confusion. The update states that users will set a primary home location, but the streaming platform is still accessible on a personal device or new TV while using it for vacation purposes. As for additional viewers outside of the household, Netflix subscribers can purchase profiles for up to two people they do not live with for an extra $5.95 per profile.
Though the anti-password sharing measures have been met with immense criticism since Netflix first announced its plans, this newest update hasn't been received much more favorably. One of the key issues with Netflix's original plans was that it initially stated that each Netflix account would be linked to one household and one household WiFi, meaning that anyone wanting to watch Netflix on vacation or in any other location would be locked out of their account.
Recently, Netflix came under fire for a 2017 post to Twitter reading "Love is sharing a password," which the company has severely backpedaled on in the past few months. With some long-time subscribers cancelling their Netflix subscriptions outright and moving exclusively to other streaming services, it's unclear how severely Netflix's password-sharing rules will affect the company.
