Chinese startup Neolix is moving its autonomous delivery robots into mass production
Autonomous delivery vehicles have several technological advantages over self-driving cars designed to carry human passengers. Firstly, autonomous delivery vehicles can focus only on the safety of surrounding humans, since no humans are inside the delivery vehicle. This focus is aided by the delivery vehicle's ability to limit itself to much slower speeds than a human passenger in a self-driving car would tolerate.
Autonomous delivery vehicles also carry less weight and thus use less power, making them less expensive to operate and cheaper to build. Right now, most delivery vehicles have a single start and end point - their home store or warehouse, which limits the complexity of their planning and mapping requirements.
Pair that with high demand for same-day delivery, and all of these simplifications make autonomous delivery vehicles attractive - both in China and the United States.
