National health department avails 126 more mental health professionals
There are 126 private specialists, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, occupational therapists and registered counsellors, contracted by the national department of health to complement the already available staff to provide mental health services at primary healthcare facilities across the country.
The department’s spokesperson, Foster Mohale, said the extra hands will improve access to and quality of mental health services.Mohale said in South Africa, the most common mental health disorders included anxiety, depression, post-traumatic stress and substance use disorders.
