Modack and his co-accused face 122 charges related to various crimes, including murder, extortion, money laundering, racketeering and fraud.
CAPE TOWN - The trial of alleged underworld crime boss, Nafiz Modack, is set to continue on Monday, with his defence attorney ready to cross-examine the State's main witness, Hawks' officer, Edward du Plessis.
Evidence presented in court by Du Plessis shows Modack allegedly used millions in extorted money, which he laundered through a front company, to pay some of the accused to commit crime. The State alleges that Modack used the front company's bank account to pay co-accused, Zane Kilian, to track slain top cop, Charl Kinnear, up to a day before his murder in September 2020.
Modack is also accused of plotting other murders, including the father of a Hawks officer, Nicholaas Heerschap, and tow-truck driver, Richard Joseph, as well as the attempted murder of prominent Cape Town attorney, William Booth. A self-confessed gunman and two co-accused told the court they acted on Modack's instruction to commit crime.
