Mwepu has thus joined a long list of players who unfortunately had to end their careers at an early age.

The Argentine initially experienced chest pains in a fixture against Deportivo Alaves in October 2021, with Barca later revealing that this was caused by a heart arrhythmia, a broad term to define any heart rhythm that is not normal. The former Buccaneers shot-stopper was playing for Tshakhuma Tsha Madzivhandila when a ball hit him in the face, resulting in damage to his eyes.

He has done well for himself since hanging up his boots, though, having become the Lilywhites' academy director before being appointed the first team's interim head coach following Jose Mourinho's departure in 2021. He is now part of Antonio Conte's coaching staff at the club.
