MABOU HARBOUR — A simple toothbrush convinced a Mabou Harbour woman to join her sister on a medical mission to Central America this spring. Jessie Helen ...
Jessie Helen MacNeil, left, and Nora MacNeil are heading to Honduras in May as part of an international non-profit organization that helps communities with health care, economic development, and water and sanitation issues. The sisters each need to raise $1,700 to help pay for the cost of things likes medical supplies so the two talented fiddle players are hosting a Christmas concert at St. Mary's Church in Mabou on Dec. 20, beginning at 7 p.m.
“When Nora told me a lot of the individuals didn’t even know what a toothbrush was, that opened eyes to the lack of health-care services,” said Jessie Helen, who is set to complete her bachelor of science in nursing degree from Saint Francis Xavier University in May. “It’s crazy to think that some people don’t even know what a toothbrush was. It’s common knowledge to us but it’s such an easy fix, too.
“It was a big eye-opening thing for me because I knew there are communities in the world that live in conditions like this but I’ve never seen it first-hand. So that was something big for me to go down there and see how much we take for granted in comparison to others.”Global Brigades participants are each required to raise $1,700 to help pay for the cost of medical supplies and other materials.
Their younger sisters are also gifted musicians. Orianna sings and plays guitar, Katie Agnes plays piano, and Floragael plays fiddle and sings.
