Eight separate rescues took place on Lion's Head and Table Mountain over the Christmas and Boxing Day holidays due to a combination of high temperatures, large crowds of visitors, and challenging mountain conditions.
Lion's Head and Table Mountain saw eight separate rescue operations over Christmas and Boxing Day. A combination of hot weather, a large number of visitors, and unpredictable mountain conditions contributed to the need for emergency services.
Thanks to the combined efforts of Wilderness Search and Rescue (WSAR), Western Cape Government Health and Wellness EMS, Air Mercy Service (AMS), City of Cape Town Law Enforcement, and SANParks Table Mountain National Park rangers, all eight cases were safely resolved. David Nel, spokesperson for WSAR, said this period is usually busy for hikers, but this year's extreme heat made things more difficult. He thanked the teams for their hard work and dedication. On Christmas Day, a 41-year-old American hiker collapsed on the Lion's Head trail. He was escorted down the trail and taken to the hospital. Later that day, a 54-year-old Dutch woman collapsed on the Platteklip Gorge trail. She was airlifted from the mountain by the Western Cape Government Health and Wellness EMS and AMS rescue helicopter.
