Popular South Africa n restaurant Mugg & Bean has been criticized by social media users after a screenshot of a waiter's low payslip went viral. The post, which first appeared on Facebook, showed an employee claiming to have received a minimal amount from the restaurant. According to the payslip, reportedly for December, the waiter took home less than R1,500 after almost R3,000 in deductions.

Entertainment blogger Phil Mphela publicly expressed his disappointment in the salaries paid to Mugg & Bean's waiters. Phil Mphela's tweet caught the attention of Mugg & Bean, who responded by stating that the public had been misled. The restaurant claimed to pay its employees according to the Basic Conditions of Employment Act and explained that the viral payslip only represented a partial truth. They stated that a UIF deduction and salary advance had been made to support the employee during the holidays, and the remaining balance would be paid at the end of the month according to their payroll schedule. Meanwhile, the National Minimum Wage is currently set at R27.58 per hour, and a parliamentary committee has proposed an increase to R28.79 per hour. This proposed increase would equate to a monthly income of R5,182.20 for a full-time worker, up from last year's R4,412.80
