A South African tavern where eight people were killed in a mass shooting has been ordered to close for 30 days while police investigate. A suspect has been arrested and charged. Community safety officials are working to address concerns about gangsterism in the area.

A tavern in Mpumalanga, South Africa , where eight people tragically lost their lives in a mass shooting last week, has been ordered to close for 30 days as police continue their intensive investigation. The closure comes after the arrest of a 39-year-old suspect linked to the shooting. Law enforcement officers discovered a firearm and 13 rounds of ammunition in his possession during the arrest.

The suspect, whose name is Nkosi, appeared in the Kabokweni Magistrate’s Court, with his case postponed to January 21 for a formal bail application.Acting Mpumalanga Police Commissioner Zeph Mkhwanazi provided new details about the shooting during a press conference on Wednesday. Mkhwanazi revealed that an unknown gunman initially arrived at the tavern and fired shots into the air before leaving and returning with two VW Polos. According to Mkhwanazi, the gunman, accompanied by two other individuals, opened fire inside the tavern, resulting in the tragic loss of eight lives. While speculation has linked the shooting to gang activity, Mkhwanazi emphasized the need for thorough investigations before confirming any motives. He stated, “We are actually going forward with our investigation. It can happen that we can pick up other as well, but up to so far that’s where we are, and we’re going to move from that position.”The tavern owner had previously received a fine during the festive season in December for operating beyond permitted hours under the Mpumalanga Liquor Licensing Act. Following the recent shooting, the owner was issued another fine, and the establishment was ordered to temporarily shut down. Authorities will monitor the situation for 30 days and assess the outcome. Meanwhile, Mpumalanga Community Safety, Security and Liaison MEC Jackie Macie addressed community concerns, stating that the shooting was not linked to similar incidents elsewhere in the country. Macie acknowledged the prevalence of gangsterism in Pienaar but assured the community that efforts are underway to combat the issue. She emphasized, “We are not going to shy away to say the element of gangs , hence all hands are on deck to get rid of that.” Despite the shooting, Macie noted that there were no significant incidents reported at the Pienaar Police Station during the festive season.
