Six people were killed and three others injured in a shooting at a tavern in Pienaar, Mpumalanga. Police have arrested two suspects, recovering a firearm with ammunition from one of the arrested individuals.
Police in Mpumalanga have made two arrests in connection with a shooting that left six people dead and three others injured in Pienaar on Sunday, January 12. The shooting occurred at a tavern, and the deceased included a woman and five men. Two other victims later succumbed to their injuries in hospital. Three other victims, two men and a woman, were hospitalized. Police spokesperson, Brigadier Selvy Ndubane, confirmed the arrests and details regarding the seized weapons.
Ndubane said a 39-year-old male suspect was arrested on Sunday night, January 12, in Pienaar. During the suspect’s arrest, police confiscated a pistol with about 13 live ammunition. On Tuesday afternoon, a 43-year-old man was also arrested, and no ammunition were confiscated during the arrest. Ndubane stated that the suspect will appear in court soon. The motive behind the shooting is still unknown, and circumstances surrounding the incident are still under investigation. Two Volkswagen Polos were found at the scene with bullet holes, and one of the victims was found dead inside one of the vehicles. Police urge anyone with information about the shooting to come forward. Following the shooting, Mpumalanga MEC for Community Safety, Security and Liaison, Jackie Macie, condemned the horrific incident. 'We are once more appealing that the police be given space and time to get to the bottom of the shootings. The perpetrators must be urgently arrested,' he said. 'We are again calling on liquor traders to always prioritize the safety of their patrons. We further extend our deepest and heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased, and we also wish those who were injured a speedy recovery.
